Pumpkins

The beloved pumpkin has been a Fall staple since we can all remember. Who doesn’t love pumpkin pie? Did you know that Over 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkin are produced each year in the United States?! Pumpkins are a winter squash that is in the family Cucurbitacae. This in turn makes pumpkin a fruit due to its seed-bearing structure of flowering plants.

BUY IT

When buying your fresh pumpkin, make sure it is firm with a bright color. Avoid cuts in the pumpkin and know that blemishes are okay! If there are spots on the pumpkin that look flat or dirty that just means that’s where it was laying in the patch!

ADD IT

When cooking your pumpkin, add those pumpkin pieces to boiling water and cook until tender. Drain, cool, and peel. Once you’ve done this, you can mash it, make a puree, use it as pie filling, etc!

PREP IT

Prepping a pumpkin is as easy as you think it is! Just cut your pumpkin in half or in quarters and remove the seeds. Scrape out the stringy portions and cut into large pieces. We recommend saving the seeds and making pumpkin seeds for a great snack!
