Turnips
Turnips are in season starting October through March. Did you know that turnips are a root vegetable characterized by a white spherical shape, a crowning blush of purple, and a leafy green stem? Turnips are under the mustard family along with radishes and arugula.
BUY IT
When looking to buy turnips, look for bright colored turnips with a violet ring around the top and white colored bottoms. When looking for freshly harvested turnips, look to see if the green stem is attached. If they are not attached, this means that during the winter the turnips have been stored therefore their leaves have been removed.
ADD IT
To cook turnips, you can roast, mash, bake or add to soup! Turnips can have a hot flavor to them which makes them great for to pair with another strong flavor, like ginger. You can add a turnip to your favorite stew, add them to your mashed potatoes, or use them as a garnish!
PREP IT
If your turnips have their stems still attached, it’s best to remove them to store. Store your turnips in the fridge in a wrapped in a plastic bag. Turnips thrive in a cool, dry environment. When ready to use, wash and prep as need.
