Squash

Butternut squash, acorn squash, spaghetti squash, and pumpkins are in season at the end of summer and beginning of fall are harvest times for winter squash, but because they store so well that they're available almost year-round. Since squash contains seeds and develops from the flower-producing part of a plant, it is botanically a fruit.

BUY IT

When picking your squash, see if it feels heavy for its size. Squash should have a glossy and firm feel to it. Do make sure that it is not too soft and has no visible cuts. Butternut squash should have a hard skin without bruises or mold. Remeber that a darker spot can indicate where the squash has been resting.

ADD IT

Squash pairs great with pastas, vegetable dishes, and as a side. It is so versatile that it can be hard to find a dish were squash couldn’t be added. Squash can be added to your main course or to your dessert. Make sure to buy the right squash based on the recipe you have.

PREP IT

When prepping your squash, it is up to your preference if you like the skin or choose to take the skin off. When you cook the squash, the skin because soft and delicious to any dish. To prep, you cut off the tops of the squash and you can cut, dice, noodle, etc. depending on your recipe.
