Plums
Did you know that plums are relatives to the peach, nectarine, and almond family? Plums can be very nutritious as they are a great source of vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. They also have characteristics that may help reduce the risk of many chronic diseases, such as osteoporosis, cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Plums are In season May through early October!
BUY IT
Plums should be plump and have the bright purple hue, depending on variety. Avoid buying plums that are overly soft and overly hard. Overly soft plums will have a shriveled skin and mushy spots. Overly hard plums will have difficulty ripening and won’t be as sweet. When buying plums you can buy some that are fairly firm to allow them to ripen at home. Once they are soft, put them in the fridge to help them from spoiling.
ADD IT
Plums can be used in differently ways and most commonly are a great treat! Plums can be used in pies, cakes, and jams! However, plums are great when pickled, poached, grilled, carmelized, and used in salads!
PREP IT
Always wash your plums before using. Depending on the recipe, plums can be used with their skins still attached. Remove the pits before slicing by cutting in half and removing. It’s always best to taste the plum before using to taste the level of sweet or tartness. Plums can be refrigerated before using.
