Pomegranates
Pomegranates belong to the berry family and are classified as a super fruit. Their seeds owe their superfood status to polyphenols, powerful antioxidants thought to offer heart health and anti-cancer benefits. They also are a source of fibre, B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin K and potassium. Their peak season in the United States is typically from September to December.
BUY IT
When buying a pomegranate, it should feel heavy. The weight of the pomegranate signifies how juicy it is. The skin should be shiny with a bright brown and red hue. Make sure there are no signs of bruising or soft spots.
ADD IT
Pomegranate’s have been a great source of antioxidants and the seeds are perfect to top your morning yogurt with. However, pomegranate’s can be used for so much more! You can add the pomegranate’s seed to salads, add to cocktail, and roast with vegetables.
PREP IT
When you’re ready to seed your pomegranate, cut each end of the fruit off and cut it in quarters. Gently pull apart the pieces, and submerge them in a bowl of water. Once the seeds have floated or you have helped by using a spoon to pull them out, strain the water and allow the seeds to dry.
